Asteroid impact warning to the world

Experts are calling on the world to recognise the “global threat” of an asteroid hit to earth.

Scientists and astronauts have been holding a three-day workshop in Germany, discussing how countries would react.

Rusty Schweickart is a former Apollo 9 astronaut and now head of the European Sapce Agency’s committee on near-earth objects (NEOs): ” What we need to do is bring the world together, recognise that this is a global threat. This is not Germany or the United States or ESA or anybody else. This is a global threat.”

The conference in the city of Darmstadt is considering theoretical but plausible scenarios of an asteroid impact on our planet.

“The question often arises in the general public: Can we in fact do something about this. And the answer is yes. We don’t even have to develop new technologies. Our existing space technology enables us to actually slightly change the orbit of an asteroid that we see headed an impact 15 or 20 or 50 years ahead of us.”

The workshop’s finding will later be merged with findings of other experts to create a final report to the UN committee. The report will recommend how to react to an impact threat.

    Here’s something to dwell on as you head to work next week: A small asteroid the size of a tour bus will make an extremely close pass by the Earth on Monday, but it poses no threat to the planet

    The asteroid will make its closest approach at 1:14 p.m. EDT (1714 GMT) on June 27 and will pass just over 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface, NASA officials say. At that particular moment, the asteroid — which scientists have named 2011 MD — will be sailing high off the coast of Antarctica, almost 2,000 miles (3,218 km) south-southwest of South Africa.

    Asteroid 2011 MD was discovered Wednesday (June 22) by LINEAR, a pair of robotic telescopes in New Mexico that scan the skies for near-Earth asteroids. The best estimates suggest that this asteroid is between 29 to 98 feet (9 to 30 meters) wide.

    According to NASA’s Near-Earth Object Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., an object of this size can be expected to come this close to Earth about every 6 years or so, on average. [Photo of asteroid 2011MD trajectory]

    “There is no chance that 2011 MD will hit Earth but scientists will use the close pass as opportunity to study it w/ radar observations,” astronomers with NASA’s Asteroid Watch program at JPL wrote in a Twitter post Thursday (June 23).

    Even if the asteroid were to enter Earth’s atmosphere, it likely wouldn’t reach the surface, they added.

    “Asteroid 2011 MD measures about 10 meters. Stony asteroids less than 25 m would break up in Earth’s atmosphere & not cause ground damage,” Asteroid Watch scientists said.

    The asteroid’s upcoming Earth flyby will be a close shave, but not a record for nearby passing asteroids. The record is currently held by the asteroid 2011 CQ1, which came within 3,400 miles (5,471 kilometers) of Earth on Feb. 4 of this year.

    A tricky skywatching target

    For several hours prior to its closest approach, 2011 MD will be visible in moderately-large amateur telescopes. But despite its close approach, actually seeing this asteroid will not be an easy task.

    “These objects are so small (10 meters) that normally a sizeable telescope is required,” Asteroid Watch scientists warned.

    The asteroid will pass so close that Earth’s gravity will sharply alter the asteroid’s trajectory.

    After making its closest pass to Earth, the asteroid will zoom through the zone of geosynchronous satellites. The chance of a collision with a satellite or piece of space junk is exceedingly remote.

    History of near-Earth asteroids

    On Oct. 28, 1937, German astronomer Karl Reinmuth (1892-1979) accidentally photographed the long trail of a fast moving asteroid. Two nights later, this asteroid passed within 460,000 miles of the Earth. Reinmuth named it Hermes, after the Olympian god of boundaries and travelers.

    Since the vast majority of asteroids (so far numbering over 210,000) congregate between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, astronomers at that time felt that Hermes’ very close approach was an outstanding exception.

    “Astronomers of the day were somewhat biased,” explained NASA asteroid scientist Paul Chodas. “They had convinced themselves that collisions were too rare to consider.”

    Since then, astronomers have learned that asteroids can make very close approaches to Earth with far greater frequency than previously thought. Asteroid 2011 MD’s Monday pass is a prime example of that.

    Of the 8,099 Near-Earth objects that have been discovered, about 827 of them are asteroids with a diameter of approximately a half-mile (1 km) or larger. About 1,236 of these NEOs have been classified as Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs).

    NASA currently plans to launch a probe to visit one of these potentially dangerous near-Earth objects and return samples of the asteroid to Earth.

    That mission will launch the OSIRIS-Rex asteroid probe in 2016 to rendezvous with the space rock 1999 RQ36 in 2020. The target asteroid is 1,900 feet (580 meters) wide and has a 1-in-1,800 chance of hitting Earth in the year 2170, and a 1-in-1,000 chance of slamming into us in 2182.

    The danger this time is not an apocalyptic event, but the punishment of the Earth by a giant asteroid within five months.

    The potentially dangerous space rock is known as the asteroid 2005 YU55, a round of mini-world which is 1,300 feet (400 meters) in diameter.

    According to American scientists, this asteroid approach to earth within a short distance lunar 0.85 in early November.

    Due to its size and shape to mix by close to the ground, an extensive campaign of radar, are provided for Visual observations and infrared.

    US scientists say no there is cause for alarm, but the Russians have issued a report saying that there is something to fear.

    NASA rejects the report Russian, calling the chances of an asteroid hitting Earth ‘tiny’.

    Asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered by Spacewatch on the University of Arizona, Tucson Lunar and Planetary Laboratory on December 28, 2005.

    Spacewatch, as the asteroid “in route and headed our way, the cosmic Hobo is another reminder about life here at our meeting of duck on a planet”.

    “The approximation of the land of 2005 YU55, November 8, is unusual because it is large and close.” “On average, one does not expect a large object of this to happen this close but every 30 years”, said Don Yeomans, Manager of NASA’s Office of the programme of NEOs to Earth and the laboratory of propulsion in Pasadena, California.

    Yeomans said that with the new features of radar at Goldstone in California, part of NASA’s deep space network: there is a good chance of getting images out of radar’s 2005 YU55 at five meters of resolution. This, he said, would get greater spatial resolution of the object than the achieved by recent missions of flyby spacecraft.

    “Therefore we like to think this opportunity as a mission of close flyby with Earth as the spacecraft,” Yeomans told “When combined with the optical observations of near-infrared on the ground, radar data should provide a pretty comprehensive one of the largest potentially hazardous asteroids,” he said.

    Asteroid 2005 YU55 is a Rotator slow. Due to its size and its proximity to the Earth, the center of the minor in Cambridge, Massachusetts, planet space rock has been designated a “potentially hazardous” asteroid.

    “We are already preparing for the overflight of 2005 YU55,”, said Lance Benner, JPL researcher and specialist in near-Earth objects radar images. He said that part of the plan was to observe the asteroid radar, using both the huge Arecibo in Puerto Rico plate and the team at Goldstone.

    “The asteroid approaching from the South, Goldstone has the first opportunity to observe due to its coverage of decline,” Benner said.

    To help coordinate the campaigns of observation, “Planning of Radar observations” websites set up for the unusual occasion, Benner said.

    “This flyby will be the closest of the asteroids close to the Earth with an absolute magnitude this brilliant since 1976 and up the 2028”, added Benner. “Nobody saw 2010 XC15 during its close at Lunar distances 0.5 in 1976”.

    He pointed out that the asteroid was not discovered until the end of 2010.

    “Therefore, the overflight of 2005 YU55 will be the nearest really observed by this great, something which represents a unique opportunity,” Benner, said. “In a real sense, this will provide resolution comparable or even better than a flyby spacecraft mission”.

    Benner said that you because of that the asteroid will zoom so close by Earth, echoes of radar would be extremely strong.

    Benner said that initially, the object will be too close to the Sun and too weak to optical observers. Although late on November 8, solar elongation will grow enough to see it. From the beginning on 9 November, the asteroid could reach magnitudes 11 for several hours before fades as their distance increases rapidly, Benner said.

    Even if Earth escapes the danger that lies ahead, Russian scientists say that there is a larger threat called Apophis in the future.

    In 2004, NASA scientists announced that there is the possibility that Apophis, an asteroid of more than two football fields, could break ground in the 2029. Some additional observations and some number-doing later astronomers pointed out that the possibility of Earth hit the Earth in 2029 ca killer
    But reports of Russia say that scientists estimate that Apophis collide with the Earth April 13, 2036. These conflicts of reports on the likelihood of an event as doomsday.

    “Technically, if it is correct, in the 2036 (that Apophis hit Earth), a possibility exists”, said Donald Yeomans, Chief of Bureau of NEOs to Earth NASA program. However, this possibility is only 1 in 250,000, Yeomans said.

    Russian scientists are basing their predictions on a collision course on the possibility of the 900 foot (270 m) Apophis will travel through what is called a gravitational Keyhole look its way through the Earth in 2029.

    Gravitational Keyhole mentioned is a precise region in space, slightly larger than their own, in which the effect of the gravity of the Earth is such that could adjust the path of an asteroid Apophis.

    “The situation is that in 2029, April 13, flies (Apophis) very close to the Earth, five radii of the Earth, so it will be a great event, but we have already ruled out the possibility that strike at that time,” Yeomans said upon the mysteries of life. “On the other hand, if what we call an eye lock during this closure Earth approaching… in fact will be disturbed right right back and smack Earth on 13 April 2036”, said Yeomans.

    The possibilities of the asteroid through the keyhole, which is very small compared to the asteroid, are “tiny”, said Yeomans.

    This is the description of the scientists of that the most likely scenario: Apophis will approach quite close to Earth in late 2012 and early 2013 and will be widely observed with ground-based optical telescopes and radar systems. If it appears to be heading in a destructive way, NASA will be to develop the scheme and the machinery necessary to change the orbit of the asteroid, decreasing the probability of a collision in 2036 to zero, said Yeomans.

    There are several ways to change the orbit of the asteroid, the simplest is to launch a spacecraft hurtling rock. This technology was used on July 4, 2005, when Deep Impact smashed in the Comet Tempel 1.

    While, on October 21, 2011, it has established itself as another end of the world by Harold Camping date, 89 years removed from a civil engineer who has built a multi-million $ Christian Empire of media reporting his apocalyptic prediction. His latest doomsday prediction failed on May 21.

    Camping has preached that they could save some 200 million people, and that he left died in a series of flagella visit Earth until the world is consumed by a ball of fire on 21 October.

    PS1SCAstronomers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have discovered a new comet that they expect will be visible to the naked eye in early 2013.

    Originally found by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope on Haleakala, Maui, on the night of June 5/6, UH astronomer Richard Wainscoat and graduate student Marco Micheli confirmed it as a comet the following night using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea.

    A preliminary orbit computed by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, shows that the comet will come within about 30 million miles (50 million kilometers) of the Sun in early 2013, about the same distance as Mercury.

    Pan-STARRS telescope spots new distant comet
    The comet is named C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS). Comets are usually named after their discoverers, but in this case, because a large team, including observers, computer scientists, and astronomers, was involved, the comet is named after the telescope.

    C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) most likely originated in the Oort Cloud, a cloud of comet-like objects located in the distant outer solar system. It was probably gravitationally disturbed by a distant passing star, sending it on a long journey toward the Sun.

    Initially it’s closest point would occur at 1:37pm EDT – now it’s 9:26am EDT. First it was 29 feet, then the size of a school bus – and now it might be 98 feet? They can’t seem to decide. The space shuttle is 122ft. It goes in and out all the time without a problem with a little help from some tile.

    So they’re basically guessing about everything else – but they’re sure it’s 7500 miles and no chance of impact? If they’re so sure, why isn’t it 7,632 miles or any other number less round?

    98ft? could cause some significant damage if it hits a part of civilization.
    If it crashes in the ocean it would create a huge tsunami.
    they have only post the trajectory…..for some reason I’m finding hard time trusting NASA these days.
    Asteroid 2011 MD, the bus-sized asteroid, is coming a little too close to home for most people. And even though NASA has confirmed that there is no way this rock can hit Earth, will the world be a little concerned Monday morning around 9 am? Do we even want to know how many times bus-sized asteroids or even larger asteroids come this close to our planet?

    They are calculating and preparing to if possible take action against this Comet. John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, or OSTP, outlines plans for “(A) protecting the United States from a near-Earth object that is expected to collide with Earth.

    Interestingly, Comet C/2010 X1 (Elenin) was only “discovered” by civilian Leonid Elenin on December 10, 2010, in the official White House letter below, written back in late October 2010, the White House addressed the possibility of an Comet/Asteroid striking the Earth.

    The WISE spacecraft will remain in hibernation without ground contacts awaiting possible future use.

    If you caught Starfire Tor on CoastToCoastAM last week you may have heard her mention that ‘they’, the PowersThatBe know that an incoming near earth object is going hit earth sometime in the next 2 years. There is evidence to suggest the object is going to strike one of the poles… most likely the south pole. Special Scientific teams have been down in Antarctica mapping the ice shelf for probable weak points. The object is rumored to be 800 meters wide and when it hits the south pole the entire ice shelf will collapse within months.

    Magnetic pole changes, recent unusual Sun activity, birds and animal acting disoriented… all of these are signs of an approaching object and its gravitational influence on our inner solar system.

The theorized asteroid was then tracked by Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea, which (with the Adaptive Optics Bonnette) supplies probably the sharpest images currently obtainable from the ground.

    One week after this mysterious article disappeared, “Canadian and American astronauts say the world needs to prepare for the big one — the asteroid impact that could one day devastate the Earth.Veteran Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is president of the Association of Space Explorers, which has prepared a detailed report on the asteroid threat. The Canadian Space Agency intends to launch NEOSSat next March to look for asteroids that may be hiding near the sun. The $15-million suitcase-sized satellite will circle about 700 kilometres above the Earth. A Canadian Space Agency official says NEOSSat is expected to detect hundreds of new asteroids during its first year of operation. It will also monitor the heavy traffic of satellites now orbiting the Earth to try to prevent possible collisions.” Link

    The article hypothesized a 94% probability that the asteroid would impact on the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf and cause 2/3 of ice on Antarctica to crumble into sea. The article surmised the total collapse of all Antarctic ice within 2-4 months after impact. “A deep enough impact would crack the ice shelf like a window and total structural collapse would be inevitable, a few months at the outside.”

    If the ice on Antarctica was added the the world’s ocean it would raise them by 70 meters.
