Major Drop in Solar Activity Predicted Leading Possibly to a New Ice Age

A missing jet stream, fading spots, and slower activity near the poles say that our Sun is heading for a rest period even as it is acting up for the first time in years, according to scientists at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

As the current sunspot cycle, Cycle 24, begins to ramp up toward maximum, independent studies of the solar interior, visible surface, and the corona indicate that the next 11-year solar sunspot cycle, Cycle 25, will be greatly reduced or may not happen at all.

The results were announced at the annual meeting of the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society, which is being held this week at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces: astronomy.nmsu.edu

“This is highly unusual and unexpected,” Dr. Frank Hill, associate director of the NSO’s Solar Synoptic Network, said of the results. “But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation.”

“If we are right,” Hill concluded, “this could be the last solar maximum we’ll see for a few decades. That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth’s climate.”

  1. Thank you for sharing. It is very interesting as it confirms many things that I gathered in 7 years. Besides when you listen to the NASA official asking their personnel” to get prepared” and have a survival plan, it puts everything in perspective.

  2. So on the one hand people are saying we are all going to get fried while on the other, Earth’s climate is going to cool dramatically.
If you want to keep people in the dark regarding our near future at the Sun’s mercy, putting forward theories which are poles-opposite is the way to do it.
We are already in an ice age. The same one that’s been receding for the last 10,000 years.
The only reason civilisation has flourished in Earth’s recent times (approx. past 12,000 years), is because the Earth has been geologically and climatically stable, which is unusual.
Human development would not have happened had this low activity not occurred. We as a species have been lucky.
For all we know, the Earth may have had thousands of previous growths of intelligent species that formed civilistions in the past, only to be wiped out by natural disasters and catastrophes from space.

  3. It now looks very much as if we are in the Landscheidt Minimum which may be at least like the Dalton Minimum giving 2 or 3 decades of global cooling or even like the Maunder Minimum with an even longer and more drastic global cooling .
An inconvenient solar minimum for Al Gore…..
