High level of deadly methane bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean

Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane – a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide – have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region.
The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Igor Semiletov of the International Arctic Research Centre at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, who led the 8th joint US-Russia cruise of the East Siberian Arctic seas, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed… Read entire article independent

A two-part study by scientists from the U.S Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and Los Alamos National Laboratory paints one of the most detailed pictures yet of how climate change could impact millions of tons of methane frozen in sediment beneath the Arctic Ocean. Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases…Read entire article As Climate Changes, Methane Trapped Under Arctic Ocean Could Bubble to the Surface

Micha Ruhl and colleagues from the University of Copenhagen’s Nordic Center for Earth Evolution have published a paper in Science where they contend that the mass extinction that occurred at the end of the Triassic period, was due to a “sudden” increase in the amount of methane in the atmosphere due to the effects of global warning that resulted from the spewing of carbon dioxide from volcanoes.

Prior to this research, most scientists have believed that the sudden extinction of nearly half of all life forms on the planet was due solely to the emissions from volcanic eruptions that were occurring in what was to become the Atlantic Ocean. Ruhl et al contend that instead, what happened, was that the small amount of atmospheric heating that occurred due to the exhaust from the volcanoes, caused the oceans to warm as well, leading to the melting of ice crystals at the bottom of the sea that were holding on to methane created by the millions of years of decomposing sea life. When the ice crystals melted, methane was released, which in turn caused the planet to warm even more, which led to more methane release in a chain reaction, that Ruhl says, was the real reason for the mass extinction that led to the next phase in world history, the rise of dinosaurs. 1. they’re noticing the same thing coming from the Siberian permafrost’s and also in Antarctica, were raising the temperature of our planet very slowly, but no governments can agree on a course of action to combat it, the mighty dollar rules over all of it.

we end up being left with the choice
    Economy or the planet….

and those guys on top have probably got thier plan in place for when they kill the planet

  2. I recently saw photos of a methane bubble event in, I believe, Russia. It was very large indeed from the looks of it and the scientists who were looking at it showed proper concern. Anyone got anything on this?

  3. Oh, duah, I did not look to my left…Yeah, there it is–Luke, I don’t think this is a money thing…No, honestly, I think this is a science mechanics thing. I mean, can you come up with a way to prevent or modify something like this? I am sure someone would love to have an idea…Hey, there are some things in heaven and earth that humans simply have no ability to control.

I just had a thought–in the Pacific, there is a plastic sea thing where all the refuge from us clever humans manages to accumulate because of tidal flow. What happens if we get a methane up welling there? contemplate that for a minute…uck!

  4. Well for a start with temperatures now being able to rise much more rapidly to add to the existing co2 greenhouse effects…there will be greater melting of the glaziers around the planet meaning higher sea level rises with the accompanying low lying coastal sea shores being quickly taken over by the ever incoming sea waters…which should help governments all over decide to first move in their peoples to higher grounds immediately…from there the next job of accomodating greater concentrations of peoples where ever should kick in …where food water and other infrastucture should be readied …and parallely while waters continue to rise and flow in and the perimeters get eaten up …people mght panic…which leads to concern for greater human governance…..at this time proper practical leaders must be identified all over who will be able to organise and manage turbulent and panic sticken humans..along with the sick and downtrodden.
Different layers of leadership should be put in place soonest to help avert greater turmoil pending other solutions which will come as time passes.
Good luck fellow humans all over but keep the peace always…our planet is like another ship but we can do our parts and avoid enhancing its SINKING probabilities IF WE KEEP A COOL HEAD ALWAYS AND DO WHAT NECESSARY FIRST…which is confront the problem as it comes and get the peoples inwards first to higher grounds.

  5. I was reading some prophecies that some people had, that stated that in the future “explosions” would occur and threaten the world. “Explosions will occur over the entire world of a magnitude beyond our capacity to imagine. If they continue, human life as we have known it will not exist.” Another one was “A giant explosion in the Earth’s atmosphere will cause much land to be destroyed.” I was puzzled over what kind of explosions would do that (nuclear? volcanic?) but when I read this article, I could see a connection.

  6. Sorry guys I just did some methana right now during the time I was reading at this text. Seriously! It is something that can cause alot of damage to the earth if we don’t do anything. I don’t know why our governments always take the easy way and ignore the future of our planet!!!

  7. The climatologists warned us this would happen if we didn’t reduce our CO2 emissions. That the heating of the planet would eventually and inevitably cause the release of vast quantities of trapped methane that are many times more heat-trapping than CO2 and when that happened, we’d have set off a runaway positive feedback loop that will truly “cook our goose”, so to speak.

I recently read, with utter horror and dismay, that instead of reducing our CO2 emissions, our global outputs have actually soared! Yes, we’re emitting even more CO2 than ever before! One can’t help but think that humans somehow have a death wish. That we willfully and knowingly are just frolicking ever so happily towards our own demise, with not a care in the world. We can’t say we weren’t warned! Yet still, with the evidence all around us, you’ll STILL hear from lesser-educated denialists, that anthropogenic global warning is a hoax! I mean, the lack of education and understanding these simpletons possess is simply astounding and we’re all going to suffer because of it.

“Global CO2 emissions soar despite efforts by industrialised countries”

“Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) – the main cause of global warming – increased by 45 % between 1990 and 2010, reaching an all-time high of 33 billion tonnes in 2010. These findings were published on Wednesday 21 September [2011] in the report “Long-term trend in global CO2 emissions”, prepared by the JRC’s Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) and PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. ”

    • The carbon dioxide is not causing the world to warm up, and if any, it is only very slight. The sun is in a hyperactive phase right now and it is causing all the planets in the solar system, including the earth, to warm up. So it doesn’t matter how much carbon dioxide we put in the air, the earth will still warm up. The blame on carbon dioxide is based on flawed research and political propaganda.

      • With all due respect, that is simply not true. The issue of climate change is not an ideological (political) debate, it’s a purely scientific one. Science doesn’t give two hoots if you’re left or right. Also, two of the solar systems planets are actually cooling, (Mars and Jupiter. ) Also, over the last fifty years, the sun’s output has actually DECREASED slightly.

If you have read any scientific reports, (and are not just parroting erroneous second-hand info), you would also be well of the fact, that the “Total Solar Radiance” levels, as they are called, do NOT account for the recent rise in temperature and scientists have OF COURSE taken the sun’s output into account. I can’t remember the exact number right now, but I think the sun’s contribution accounts for about 17%. Read some scientific reports and then you can correct me if my memory fails me, and then state the correct percentage for everyone’s benefit .

Also, another interesting thing to study, is the demographics of the denialists. Do that, and you will find that the vast proportion of denialists reside in the southern states of the U.S, are politically positioned towards the Right and/or are among the lesser educated of the populace, reinforcing the assumption, that denialists are indeed politically / ideologically motivated, and that they’re positions are not based on scientific evidence. (Science adhers not to demographic distribution, but is universal) Do that, and get back to us with your results on that research, too. 😉
