GRAIL Mission: First NASA Video from the Far Side of the Moon

First NASA Video from the Far Side of the Moon

PASADENA, Calif. — A camera aboard one of NASA’s twin Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) lunar spacecraft has returned its first unique view of the far side of the moon. MoonKAM, or Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students, will be used by students nationwide to select lunar images for study.

GRAIL consists of two identical spacecraft, recently named Ebb and Flow, each of which is equipped with a MoonKAM. The images were taken as part of a test of Ebb’s MoonKAM on Jan. 19. The GRAIL project plans to test the MoonKAM aboard Flow at a later date.

In the video, the north pole of the moon is visible at the top of the screen as the spacecraft flies toward the lunar south pole. One of the first prominent geological features seen on the lower third of the moon is the Mare Orientale, a 560-mile-wide (900 kilometer) impact basin that straddles both the moon’s near and far side.

The clip ends with rugged terrain just short of the lunar south pole. To the left of center, near the bottom of the screen, is the 93-mile-wide (149 kilometer) Drygalski crater with a distinctive star-shaped formation in the middle. The formation is a central peak, created many billions of years ago by a comet or asteroid impact.

“The quality of the video is excellent and should energize our MoonKAM students as they prepare to explore the moon,” said Maria Zuber, GRAIL principal investigator from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.

The twin spacecraft successfully achieved lunar orbit this past New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Previously named GRAIL-A and GRAIL-B, the washing machine-sized spacecraft received their new names from fourth graders at the Emily Dickinson Elementary School in Bozeman, Mont., following a nationwide student naming contest.

Thousands of fourth- to eighth-grade students will select target areas on the lunar surface and send requests to the GRAIL MoonKAM Mission Operations Center in San Diego. Photos of the target areas will be sent back by the satellites for students to study. The MoonKAM program is led by Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space. Her team at Sally Ride Science and undergraduate students at the University of California in San Diego will engage middle schools across the country in the GRAIL mission and lunar exploration. GRAIL is NASA’s first planetary mission carrying instruments fully dedicated to education and public outreach.

“We have had great response from schools around the country; more than 2,500 signed up to participate so far,” Ride said. “In mid-March, the first pictures of the moon will be taken by students using MoonKAM. I expect this will excite many students about possible careers in science and engineering.”

Launched in September 2011, Ebb and Flow periodically perform trajectory correction maneuvers that, over time, will lower their orbits to near-circular ones with an altitude of about 34 miles (55 kilometers). During their science mission, the duo will answer longstanding questions about the moon and give scientists a better understanding of how Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system formed.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., manages the GRAIL mission for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The GRAIL mission is part of the Discovery Program managed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft.

  1. 1. This 3D model made of the highest quality!
    2. And the stars then where?
    3. Why only 20 seconds of video?
    4. Where’s photo?
    5. Another crap to gullible Americans, yes, and the human race in general.
    P.S. This is a fraud!
P.P.S. Aha! Now! NASA gave you a look at the side of the moon. Do you know how many satellites of various aerospace agencies, flies over the moon! And that is yet not a single recording is not published for all these years, especially the back side of the moon! There are a couple pictures of craters in high resolution and truncated! So, you must be a complete idiot, what would once again, to eat a tale NASA.

  2. @myunhauzen74->So I gather that you don’t believe this video is real or relevant. I am sure someone with the right technology could produce these images. It is done in the movies all the time. What I want to know however, what is that is causing your very apparent irritation on this issue? Have you looked for other sources and pix? I guess I am just a bug about collecting data points. This is one episode – maybe there are others. If you are so irritated, how about helping me out here, [since I don’t have the time] to produce images which refute this one or maybe even agree with this one? Most of all, it is ok if you don’t believe it is possible for there to be “bases” on the far side of the moon…At least you are thinking about the issue. That is exceptional. Most folks really cannot be bothered. So, jump in…See what you can come up with. I would be very interested. Anyone else who wants to contribute to that potential discussion would be more than welcome. I would love to see someone attempt to reproduce this video…That would be very interesting. • I’m annoyed not only the poor quality of the image, which has provided NASA and the duration of the video. NASA think that we – the people on so many stupid that eats this video. If more clearly analyze the video, it shows that it is made up of photos of NASA, the Apollo missions made! In a word – NASA continues to lie to people! Thank you for reviewing! PEACE!

Dear Mariana, the cause of the irritation is that though NASA receives on-going funds, a basic requirement for transparency is for the images to be in colour.
The enomity of the colour & beauty of the Moon is no secret.
Kindly appreciate that the entire cosmos is FREE to all, not just to NASA & a select few.
Sure, we would all assist in contributions. Will NASA kindly create a fund for us so that we too could dedicate our research & inspiration.
      Thanking you.

  4. Let me give you some history here. I have been a NASA watchersince President Kennedy first made the suggestion…noone is more pissed off at NASA than I am…Oh, my reasons are far too elaborate to cover here. In that time, shock, awe, grieving and disappointment after disappointment after disappointment, I began to look for cracks in the doorway to their information. More than that, I began to look for motivation-motivation-motivation. It is not until I began looking at Richard Hoaglands work that I began to get it. While this did not decrease my frustration by much, I did begin to understand the psycology of the organization some what and further than that, I began to understand that there was something other than NASA blocking the doorway. That was when I decided to find out what that other something was. Oh, my!

Yes, you are correct, NASA is hypothetically a public agency and while using the public dime, they should be answerable to the public. The problem has been, they became scared. It is that simple. I saw one press conference where the scientists who were trying to report to the public that they had a rock which appeared to have the fossil of a living organism in it–from Mars…were verbally repremanded during the reporting process.on camera [CNN I think] some guy who was behaving like a chain gang boss. I was astonished. The reaction of the scientists was that of terror..It happened so fast they could not contain their response. That was a huge red flag for me…

Shortly before this incident, I read “Above Top Secret” [the authors name is lost at the moment] The chain of command for NASA started in a place so high it was out of view and had been since the Roswell Incident. The lingo describes this as BLACK OPS [budget]. At the time, the public did not have access to the high tech machines we have in our livingrooms today. If you go back you will see they were dealing with conputers with less flexibility and memory than todays average video game.

More than that, they had nothing to compare anything to. They did not have the right science because there had been no science like it before. In the meantime, back at the ranch, our BLACK ops guys [no women allowed] were trying to dissect the ship they had gotten their hands on at Roswell. They farmed out the bits and pieces into the coorporate world and if you will look at the time line, you will see that suddenly the general public was able to purchase little gizmos that were amazing. Suddenly we had fiber optics and all sorts of stuff like that…Thank you Roswell…

In the meantime, we were flying tin cans into space with huge unwieldy computers that were not even up to par with what the public was getting. It did not make any sense. That was when I figured out that something else was going on. When we got to the moon, and we did get to the moon…Fear rose upon the horizon of that discovery…there was something there that they absolutely could not share. Listen to the astronauts–they are talking now.

The monster at the door was fear–If they told the American public what they were finding, they were sure all hell would break loose..riots–was the worst scenerio..fear and loathing on the land. Thus it was the air brushing and censoring increased. the more they learned the less they talked. They were mandated to hide their science. They were mandated to hide anything anyone else discovered..Anyone who stepped forward was cruelly dealt with. Richard Hoagland was not taking NO for an answer and he became even more outspoken as time went on.

All of this has happened very fast. NASA funding kept getting cut. They had to get smarter and quieter. Notice how that space station seemed to grow like topsy without much public todo. Notice how we have satilites flying in places we never dreamed to look at before. The more they found, the more they concealed. But don’t ya know, the general public was finally getting pretty good with this technology thing. Ways were being found to retrieve information and uncover photos. There is a whole world of NASA -leak thinkers out there, quietly going about the business of undoing the secrets. Within the agency itself there are those who realize that disclosure is a must.

Thus it is I say, If you believe something is hidden, find a way to reveal it. The technology in the public is astonishing. If you waste time being angry with an agency that sits in the dragons mouth, you are wasting energy you could be using to pull the dragons teeth.

So, now the questions come…Can we the people, handle the truth? And – when we get the TRUTH – What will we do with it? As Art Bell used to say on “Coast to Coast” radio, “Wanna take a ride?!”
